Pakistan geographically is a large country and divided into four provinces which mean that different areas have different crime ratios. However, it is for sure that terrorism is the most top rated crime in Pakistan. All the provinces of Pakistan feel the devastating effects of terrorism.
Now, terrorism has a long tale in Pakistan, and that has left thousands of families in grief since 2003. According to South Asia Terrorism Portal, approximately 62,000 people have died in terrorist attacks in Pakistan, from 2003 to 2017. In the first quarter of 2017, 430 people have lost their lives in brutal terrorist attacks.
The reasons behind these terrorist attacks are wide and complex. Firstly, Al-Qaeda- a militant Islamist Sunni Organization- was involved heavily in the terrorist attacks. To add insult to injury, Taliban Movement of Pakistan also started terrorist attacks in Pakistan. In the majority of the attacks, these two organizations are involved.
These organizations have their own agendas regarding Islamic ideology, and both of them put pressure on the Pakistani government to follow their ideology, otherwise, they cause annihilation in the country. Nowadays, ISIS, a militant organization, is also coming up with the same agenda.
However, the Pakistani government has already started a rearguard operation called Zarb-e-Azb against all the terrorist agencies and got fruitful results. Terrorist attacks have been reduced significantly since 2015. A reduction of 45% terrorist attacks was noticed in 2015 and more than 50% in 2016. Hence, Operation Zarb-e-Azb is bringing very encouraging results against terrorism in Pakistan.
Also, Pakistan should seal their borders towards India and Afghanistan to make it difficult for the terrorists to enter Pakistan.
Apart from terrorism, the other major crimes in Pakistan are murder, rape, gang rape, kidnapping, and robbery. However, cyber crime is also increasing at an alarming rate.
Overall, according to the National Crime Data, the crime rate has been increased by 17.86% in this decade as compared to the last decade.
Pakistan is a big country, so different crimes have different rates in different provinces. According to OSAC, the murder rate was decreased significantly in 2015 in comparison with 2014. At the same time, rape cases have increased at an exponential rate.
Kidnapping cases grew up to 18% in 2015 as compared to 2014. Same is the case with robbery dacoity and vehicle theft. Dacoity and robbery have decreased in the Punjab province, but these crimes have increased in other provinces of Pakistan.
One unnoticed but brutal crime, Honour Killing, is increasing constantly in all provinces of Pakistan, except the Punjab. However, a few cases have been reported in Punjab too.
Reasons for the crimes are widespread from corruption to poverty and from illiteracy to favoritism. Most of the bureaucratese is corrupt in Pakistan, and they do not make criminals accountable. Poverty is another major reason behind the crimes. People, usually, are poor and they do crimes such as robbery and vehicle theft. Illiteracy in Pakistan is pushing the crime ratio of rapes and Honour Killing.
The crime rate in Pakistan can be minimized by strengthening the judicial system. If Judiciary hangs the corrupt bureaucratese, then crime ratio can be controlled. However, to demoralize the rapes and Honour Killing, some cogent steps should be taken to increase the literacy level. Nonetheless, the Pakistani government has passed a law for the cyber crime but, still, its implementation needs improvement to strangle the cyber crime rate.
One of the best solutions would be to let the citizens there arm themselves to protect them and their loved ones. In the US it’s taken for granted often that we can go get the top rated self defense knives in 2017 or the best otf knives of 2017 in the same day. There they cannot so perhaps some sort of reform there can take place for the citizens there.
