The Current Crime Trends in Pakistan

Pakistan geographically is a large country and divided into four provinces which mean that different areas have different crime ratios. However, it is for sure that terrorism is the most top rated crime in Pakistan. All the provinces of Pakistan feel the devastating effects of terrorism.

Now, terrorism has a long tale in Pakistan, and that has left thousands of families in grief since 2003. According to South Asia Terrorism Portal, approximately 62,000 people have died in terrorist attacks in Pakistan, from 2003 to 2017. In the first quarter of 2017, 430 people have lost their lives in brutal terrorist attacks.

The reasons behind these terrorist attacks are wide and complex. Firstly, Al-Qaeda- a militant Islamist Sunni Organization- was involved heavily in the terrorist attacks. To add insult to injury, Taliban Movement of Pakistan also started terrorist attacks in Pakistan. In the majority of the attacks, these two organizations are involved.

These organizations have their own agendas regarding Islamic ideology, and both of them put pressure on the Pakistani government to follow their ideology, otherwise, they cause annihilation in the country. Nowadays, ISIS, a militant organization, is also coming up with the same agenda.

However, the Pakistani government has already started a rearguard operation called Zarb-e-Azb against all the terrorist agencies and got fruitful results. Terrorist attacks have been reduced significantly since 2015. A reduction of 45% terrorist attacks was noticed in 2015 and more than 50% in 2016. Hence, Operation Zarb-e-Azb is bringing very encouraging results against terrorism in Pakistan.

Also, Pakistan should seal their borders towards India and Afghanistan to make it difficult for the terrorists to enter Pakistan.

Other Crimes

Apart from terrorism, the other major crimes in Pakistan are murder, rape, gang rape, kidnapping, and robbery. However, cyber crime is also increasing at an alarming rate.

Overall, according to the National Crime Data, the crime rate has been increased by 17.86% in this decade as compared to the last decade.

Pakistan is a big country, so different crimes have different rates in different provinces.  According to OSAC, the murder rate was decreased significantly in 2015 in comparison with 2014. At the same time, rape cases have increased at an exponential rate.

Kidnapping cases grew up to 18% in 2015 as compared to 2014. Same is the case with robbery dacoity and vehicle theft. Dacoity and robbery have decreased in the Punjab province, but these crimes have increased in other provinces of Pakistan.

One unnoticed but brutal crime, Honour Killing, is increasing constantly in all provinces of Pakistan, except the Punjab. However, a few cases have been reported in Punjab too.

Reasons for the crimes are widespread from corruption to poverty and from illiteracy to favoritism. Most of the bureaucratese is corrupt in Pakistan, and they do not make criminals accountable. Poverty is another major reason behind the crimes. People, usually, are poor and they do crimes such as robbery and vehicle theft. Illiteracy in Pakistan is pushing the crime ratio of rapes and Honour Killing.

The crime rate in Pakistan can be minimized by strengthening the judicial system. If Judiciary hangs the corrupt bureaucratese, then crime ratio can be controlled. However, to demoralize the rapes and Honour Killing, some cogent steps should be taken to increase the literacy level. Nonetheless, the Pakistani government has passed a law for the cyber crime but, still, its implementation needs improvement to strangle the cyber crime rate.

One of the best solutions would be to let the citizens there arm themselves to protect them and their loved ones. In the US it’s taken for granted often that we can go get the top rated self defense knives in 2017 or the best otf knives of 2017 in the same day. There they cannot so perhaps some sort of reform there can take place for the citizens there.

Evaluating Sources in a ‘Post-Truth’ World: Ideas for Teaching and Learning About Fake News

The issue of fake news has been increasing exponentially in the technological era and it is becoming out of control. Emerging technologies have attracted new ways to spread the fake news and a lot of people have become victims. The reason for this is that a lot of people are still not trained to spot the wrong news. Students should learn the methods and strategies to evaluate the sources of the news and make sure if the news is accurate and trustworthy.

A recent study from Stanford has revealed that adults are easy targets for fake news due to lack of knowledge and preparation. Now, I am going to share some ideas that can be used for teaching and learn how to spot fake news:

Check the Source

The primary step to spot fake news is to check the source of the news. For example, a news website recently published fake news about the Obamas buy a home in Dubai. However, such types of news were not published by leading news websites.

Unfortunately, publishing fake news has become a marketing tool for the new websites or newspapers to attract people. Therefore, you must check whether the source of the news is credible or not.

Similarly, teachers should inculcate to the students how to check the sources of the news and also to cross-check it with reliable sources.

Read the Minor Details of the News

If you find a catchy headline, you must read all the details of the news. Most of the time, the actual news is different from the headline. Nowadays, the headlines are written as a clickbait to attract people. For instance there could  be an article about portable basketball hoops about the best outdoor basketball hoop of the year but the article itself might not actually be about it, they could be just using the headline to get clicks that they know people want to see.

Take note, however, that the credible and trustworthy websites and newspapers also tend to sensationalize their headlines. Therefore, you must not assume the headline as the whole news; instead, you must continue reading the full story to get the exact news. Teachers should guide the students how to capture the full story. This exercise will prepare them to avoid the scams that use clickbait headlines.

Find the Author

Students must be prepared to check the trustworthiness of the author. Most of the time, the authors of the credible news agencies are trustworthy and they report the exact news. However, if you come across articles featured on low-profile blogs, let your students check the credibility of the author.

Instruct your students to visit the bio page of the author and check his past articles and qualification. Search the internet for the name of the author and look if any fake news has been attributed to him in the past.

Look for the Support of the News

Students must also be taught to check the original source of the news. Almost all the news mentions the source of the news. If you cross check that source of the news, then you may find a different story. If you find a different or fabricated story, then it means that the story is fake.

All in all, we are living in a post-truth world where sensationalism overshadows the facts. We must prepare the students early on how to spot the fake news and to avoid the scam.
